Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
