EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
