Hellenic authorities have significantly increased protective protocols at multiple major ports in an effort to prevent protesters from targeting a cruise liner transporting visitors from Israel on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.
The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo followed earlier rallies when the MS Crown Iris made port in Kalamata in the past few days. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after area inhabitants staged a protest on the Cycladic island of Syros.
"In spite of the ceasefire, Israel is still continuing its attacks in Gaza," stated a schoolteacher who took part in the Kalamata demonstration. "Civilian, unarmed people are being killed."
From the upper deck, tourists watched as crowds in Kalamata chanted: "You need the authorities, you're not wanted in Greece."
An prominent activist, who worked throughout summer arranging anti-war protests across Greece, stated: "Those Israelis who approve of the policies of their government aren't accepted here."
An international relations expert noted: "Due to geographic proximity and our traditional ties with the Arab world, the ordinary Greek person is more sensitive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the typical European from central or northern regions."
"Greece is in a difficult position," he added. "Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an associate than it is for most European states."
Government statistics show that in excess of 600,000 tourists from Israel visited Greece in 2024, with estimates of greater tourism this year. This substantial influx underscores the greatly strengthened connection between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.
From Athens' perspective, Israel represents not only a crucial counterweight to regional rival Turkey but also provides the supplementary bonus of better official channels to Washington.
"The Hellenic Republic is not going to jeopardize its connections with Israel," remarked the analyst. "However from a humanitarian perspective we must be more embracing, more equitable, more determined to show the improper actions of Israel in Gaza."
The scale of the Greek demonstration campaign has caught Israel off guard. Recently, the nation's diplomatic department warned travelers to maintain a low profile, while domestic press referred to Athens as a "former paradise" due to protest markings emerging on edifices in the city center.
The secretary-general of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece expressed concern: "Of course we're worried. The type of language we're experiencing can quickly turn into discriminatory."
Increasingly, protesters have focused on Athens' close ties with Israel. Up to 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to call for the termination of the Souda Bay naval base, a NATO facility that after the commencement of conflict in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US aircraft carriers, combat aircraft and ships bound for Israel.
"We have achieved successes," stated an anti-racist coordinator. "Our main demand, at present, is to halt every partnership with Israel."
