Minister Says Ministry of Defence Investigating Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

An defence minister has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing secret matters in any cars.

Security Guidance for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The wider security environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, from transport use to communication habits.
