A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
