An underground economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of unknown origin.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Response and Material Removal
Based on TikTok, the service has taken down violative content and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at residence.
After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Inside these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a injector should last, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous content on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current price rises for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.
Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
