The federal administration revealed it would offer partial relief to millions of food stamp recipients as the continuing government shutdown reached a record-breaking duration.
Amid growing uncertainty for the approximately 42 million individuals enrolled in the food assistance program, the agriculture department indicated it would use emergency resources to continue assistance, albeit at only 50% of the regular amount recipients normally obtain.
Resources for the program officially ran out on the weekend due to the US government shutdown, now in its thirty-fourth day with little indication of resolution.
The revelation came in a court filing after previous rejections to provide urgent funding on claimed legal grounds. A federal judge had determined the government could not withhold program funds as a result of the shutdown.
Subsequent to the court order, the president stated it would be "pleased" to provide vital funding for the program.
Administrators noted that money could start flowing by Wednesday, but stressed the need for further guidance from the courts on how to legally reallocate funds for SNAP benefits.
Various local governments, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, issued crisis measures to allocate interim money for assistance. However, these allocations were expected to be a small portion of the regular federal funding.
The government costs for SNAP total approximately $8 billion each month in the United States.
