Around 50 cars have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
An important representative stated the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
